PAN AFRICA CHEMISTRY NETWORK
The first hub is located at the University of Nairobi, Chemistry Department. This should bring important benefits for the University, both direct and indirect. By definition, the University would be at the centre of the action, with a very substantial and steadily increasing profile and associated public relations advantages.
The activities organized and coordinated by the hub include:
- creating new avenues for researchers across Kenya and Africa
- developing new networking and strengthening existing networks across Africa
- promoting research collaborations
- coordinating of conferences, workshops, and other scientific activities
- distribution of educational materials, including books, for schools and universities
- working with science teachers across Kenya to further develop the teaching of science
- playing a key role in increasing the number of qualified chemical scientists emerging from Africa
- administering travel grants and fellowships
- developing web pages that would be incorporated into Nairobi University’s web site
Local Management Committee is composed of:
- Chairman of the Committee - Professor Shem Wandiga, University of Nairobi
- NAPRECA Executive Secretary - Professor Jacob Midiwo (secretary)
- Chairman of the Kenya Chemical Society - Professor Charles Nguta, Egerton University
- Chairman of the Department of Chemistry, University of Nairobi - Professor Orata Duke Omondi
- RSC - Dr Alejandra Palermo
- Syngenta, Head of East Africa - Mr Andy Watt
- Director of SMASSE
The official launch of the Kenya hub took place in May 2008.
The launch was followed by a scoping workshop with representatives across the African continent who discussed five key areas: Energy, Food, Health, Water and Education. This workshop will help guiding future activities of the hub. A full report on the discussions will be available soon.
